Why did I choose to read it: On a mission to read more cozy fantasy, this one popped up on many “must read” lists.
Synopsis:
Mika is a witch. Like all witches, she knows she must keep her powers secret; so she moves around a lot and lacks a sense of belonging. Then she gets a mysterious request to teach three young witches how to handle their powers. Answering the invite she meets a flamboyant retired actor, two aging caretakers, and a prickly librarian. Just as Mika begins to feel at home, things unravel and she must decide if her found family is worth protecting.
Thoughts:
I am so glad I purchased a print copy of this book. I found it laugh-out-loud enjoyable. Most notably, and I’ve thought of this quote often since reading the book, was when “seven-year-old Altamira said with perfect gravity, ‘That was some excellent Mary Poppins shit right there.'” (page 55, Berkley paperback edition)
I tore through this one. The ensemble characters were wonderful, just what they needed to be, believable and extremely likable. All the tropes (fish out of water, hidden magic, enemies to friends, found family, orphans with power) blended in and out of the plot so well, they were easily forgotten as you read. The scenery was fun as well, making the entire book easily visualized.
There are a number of cozy fiction books out there, I can’t get to them all, but I’m glad I got to this one. As a fan of T.J. Klune, this felt very similar while having its own distinct voice and style.
Would I re-read or recommend it?
Reread? Likely. I’ll probably look for more by Mandanna as well.
Recommend? Absolutely. If you’re a cozy (light) fantasy fan, don’t miss this one – especially if you don’t mind a little romance and the occasional swearing child.
